BW Elara launches first Floating Desalination Unit hull

BW Elara has successfully launched its first barge, marking an important milestone in the development of our first Floating Desalination Unit (FDU) and our mission to bring reliable freshwater solutions to regions facing water scarcity.

With hull construction complete and the main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) packages awarded, the project now moves into its next phase. The 330ft offshore barge will undergo conversion and integration works, including the installation of mechanical, piping and electrical systems, along with the onboard reverse osmosis desalination plant.

Designed to produce 20 million litres of clean drinking water per day, the FDU offers a scalable and flexible approach to freshwater supply. Conversion is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

This milestone brings us one step closer to delivering floating desalination solutions to governments, utilities and industries seeking long-term water security.
